Bellingcat is an independent international collective of researchers, investigators, and citizen journalists using open source and social media investigations to probe a variety of subjects: crime, conflicts, corruption, secret operations, mis- and disinformation, extremist groups, and much more. We have received multiple awards for our groundbreaking research and publications that shine a light on criminal activity and help bring perpetrators to account. Members of the Bellingcat community (staff, contributors, and volunteers in more than 20 countries) work in a unique field where advanced technology, forensic research, journalism, investigative work, transparency, and accountability come together. Who We Are Looking For:
A part-time, Europe-based editor to help commission, edit, and publish our investigations. This is an exciting role in a pioneering investigative outfit that works with some of the world’s leading media, investigators, legal and law enforcement professionals, global institutions, and much more.
We are looking for a native English speaker with excellent writing and editing skills who also has a solid understanding of open source investigative techniques. Attention to detail and ability to produce engaging content is a must. The position offers opportunities to work on important global and local investigations and to cooperate and learn from the best in the field.
Who You Are:
You have a proven track record in editing long texts and publications (we require at least 3 references and 5 samples of published work that you either wrote and/or edited). You are enthusiastic about working in a demanding international environment, feel comfortable with different cultural contexts, and are able to meet strict deadlines. You are motivated to excel and are reliable
Responsibilities:
- Copy edit materials for publication
- Writing headlines and social media posts
- Preparing articles for publication on the Bellingcat website
- Reporting to the head editor about planned publications
- Availability a.m. time on the European continent
Qualifications & Skills:
- Excellent, native-level written English
- Ability to use basic Open Source tools and willingness to learn
- Fluency in major social media platforms
- Professional working knowledge of Arabic, Russian, or Spanish would be an advantage

The position is for 0.5 FTE (20 hours per week) and reports to our head editor (who is U.S.-based).
